Greetings from Panama City Beach...

Hello everyone!  I am new to surf fishing and was looking for some basic advice.  I just bought a new Rod/Reel from Half Hitch Tackle yesterday (for Cobia) and the guy said it would also be a great surf fishing setup.  I have never surf fished in my life, but the wife and I love to go to the beach, so why not try and catch a few fish while I am there.  I was wondering what kind of rig I should use and what I am looking for when choosing a spot.  Any advice would be awesome!

Cheers!

Tony

Re: Greetings from Panama City Beach...

Congatulations. Why not fish some is exactly right.

There is alot to cover, so you will need to do some reading. You should have no problems finding information over the net. I can recommend that you search for:

Double dropper rig - also known as a hi/lo rig, and the Fish Finder rig.

Those are by far the two most commonly used. I also suggest that you learn to tie your own, that way they can be made to size- for your cast and the fish.

As far as locations, you should probably start by asking around at the bait shop. They can point you to standard locations. You may just find that the spots that are good for fishing aren't all that great for lounging and she might buck you a bit. Also, you need to keep in mind that casting hooks out amongst swimmers doesn't go well everytime. Different seasons, different locations will probably enter here, too. I know not the area.

If you are going to be holding the rod, use standard J hooks, but if you will be spiking the rod go with circle hooks. Look to use really good bait. Go cheap on bait and you are wasting your time. Also get a spoon or two. Something that is the right weight for the rod to cast - distance wise.

I am not familiar with your rod and reel, never will be most likely, but try not to oversize your line. Stay below 17lb test with 15lb probably just right, or use braid in 40lb size. Most fish, even big ones, can't spool you, a well adjusted drag does wonders.

I recommend that you go slow with your purchases, and yes you will, too. Ask here about things before forking over. All my junk is either high specialized or custom or homemade. Not alot available otherwise. Surf fishing is not a big market so they ignore us mostly. Also get familiar with what fish you are likely to catch and read the rules.

I hear they catch cobia off the beach up there, and that would be a dream for most us us.

Re: Greetings from Panama City Beach...

Thanks for the info Pal!  I am planning on using a Daiwa DF100A on a 9' Penn Spinfisher, I am going to get a longer rod sometime in the future, but I am just gonna rock this setup for a while and see how it does. Thanks again.
