St George Island  (N/A)

I spent last week April 4-10 at St George Island. Caught a small pomp the first day then mostly whiting .later in week I landed a 17 inch pomp. on dead shrimp. I also did a lot of shark fishing with my Penn Senator reel. I kayak my bait out  a couple of hundred yards, drop it off and paddle back to shore. For bait I usually use a live whiting. I make my own shark tackle.Lost one spinner shark that wrapped around my leader and broke or bit it off. I then started using my heavier leader with two hooks. I was able to bring in two 7 foot bull sharks.  I would like to hook up with something big besides just sharks.  Several years ago I caught a 60 pound cobia surf fishing at Cape Hatteras, N.C. I was using a short light steel leader and a piece of blue fish for bait. I was casting the bait into the first trough on my Penn 750 open face spinning reel. That fish gave me the best fight I've ever had.

I fished the bay for reds using mud minnows a finger mullet. Fished with a bobber and on bottom but no luck. I'll be back at St George in late May and early June. I'll also be at Little Talbot in June. Last november around Thanksgiving I caught 8 reds and three black drum in the surf out at the north end near the old shrimp boat wreck.

You left too soon as the cobia are now showing up in the panhandle. It's a rare catch around these parts even off the piers.

Now,were going to talk about bluefish. For some reason, Florida has a size limit on them which is 12" to the fork. You can use a blue for bait but it has to be 12" in whole condition so the LEO can measure it if he drops by.I will say it's probaly the best bait out there for big reds, sharks and tarpon especially if you do a rain dance on it's head and get the inards all squished up and hanging out.
