Hi all! I am heading down to Destin from Ohio in early April and am looking for some good spots to surf fish. I have never surf fished before and am looking to waste some time on vacation trying my luck on the beach. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Mark.  Welcome to the board.  While I am not personally familiar with the Destin area others on this board may have some helpful insight.  As a suggestion, I would encourage you to think of surf fishing as something more than wasting time.  I generally carry a magazine, newspaper, whatever,  when I know I am going shopping with my wife.  Folks down here take fishing seriously.

so many fish...so little time

Mark,

I was in Destin a couple of years ago. I now have a home on Dog Island (next to St. George) and fish extensively from the surf. There is a State Park next to Sandestin (Topsail Hill Preserve) walkable by beach and at the time it was loaded with all kinds of inshore species. The normal catch is Pompano, Redfish, Black Drum, Trout, Sheephead, Spanish Mackerel and a slew of junk fish. It is my understanding that there are local surf fishing guides that are very reasonable, I think one goes by Pompano Jim, I met him walking up Topsail. I would personally recommend sand fleas for bait as pompano and redfish love them. Bring a sand flea rake as you can get all the bait you need, best on out going tide and enjoy. Surf fishing this area is definately not a waste of time. While Sandestin fishing is excellent I have found Dog Island surf fishing the best. I wish you safe travels and great weather.

I have recently moved down to Georgia from Delaware where we primarily surf fish. It seems like Destin may be a reasonable place to fish. What are some of the better bait and tackle shops in the town? What are the regulations for surf fishing? And most importantly what is biting this time of year? Thanks for the help.

Come on down!

Destin is a very friendly town with plenty of knowledgeable fishermen who will share.

Some real good bait shops with knowledgeable staff who are also tourist oriented.

There's always the charter fleet to go offshore if inshore/surf gets jaded. which it really won't.

You have the Choctahatchee(cs)  Bay behind you and the Gulf of Mexico in front. The Pass between the Bay and Gulf has jetties that are fun to fish from.

I don't fish there too much, being just a tad beyond my range, but did when I was stationed for 6 years at Egin AFB. I do go with friends who visit and want to go there.

Right across the Pass and down the beach is Ft Walton Beach which is a booming place.

Do you get the idea that I'm predugiced about living on the Gulf Coast? I retired in Pensacola because I love it.

Again; come on dowm. PCB is another good place.

NOTE: Blame all spelling/run on word sto Steve Austin's spell checker, which BTW, doesn't work for some reason. C2
