Got back from Oregon this Wednesday. The fishing trip was not great, but as good as I could hope for. Timing was the major issue as I thought it might be. (A month early in the season, but I had property issues that needed my personal attention at the time) The salmon run was just beginning as I was leaving and it shut down as the last snowfall came. I was lucky nuff to get out when i did. All major highways were closed for a day unless you were running chains. UGH!  Steelheads was another story. I fished almost every other day while I was out there and the steelheads gave me fights to rival Lewis and Liston. All fish caught were in the 8-16 lb range but the smaller ones were the best fighters. But they were also elusive as can be. The best day only produced 3 fish. and we were fishing 8 - 10 hours a day. The temps never got above 58* so the long days were hard fought. Water temps were DAYMN COLD! (When will we ever get GOOD insulated waders?) Bu tthe best part was the dinners we all had! Grilled, baked, as even used in sushi. Cant wait till next year.

BTW The new Lumis fly rod was worth every penny!!

Nice report Wayne! Those Steelhead are wonderful fish - fighters and handsome; sort of like our favorite locals the Pompano.

Thanks Jeff. That is one of my favorite fish to catch. I'm not all that big on the salmon but most of my friends out there  were hoping I could get a few for them. I will say that the new Lumis fly rod and my old pflueger reel were a great match. It has been at least a year since I have done any fly fishing and was still able to hit that 3' circle almost every cast. We had a few days with the wind hitting around 10-15 and was still able to hit the mark. I went with the Lumis rod thinking it will also make for a good Bonefish rod when I head south later in the year.

I just received a fishing report from a bud of mine that does commercial fishing off the west coast out of Tampa. He says the Mangroves are so thick in the water you could walk on them. The Gag groupers are hitting just as well and are larger than last year. And the kings are hitting best on free lined finger mullets. So I am about to have my boat hauled over to the west coast for the year. (It's usless on the east coast for the next few years) I am making the trip over there the third week of May to do an expedition fishing trip. If anyone cares to go, it will be free to fish. I'll probably stay for three or four days to get a good feel for the area.

Been so busy since I got back I haven't had time toeven see the beach yet. But hope to get out there by thursday in Canaveral or at least hit the inlet to see how the pomps are hitting.
