Tampa Bay is one of the largest tidal flowing estuary, next only to the Chesapeake . You have mentioned by name the "skyway" which has an elevated fishing pier both on the North end (St Petersburg)(3/4 mile long) as well as on the South end (Bradenton)(approx 4 miles long). Most fishing action occurs on the tidal change flow as there is a shipping channel which separates the two ends. There is a fishing fee (car fee/occupant fee) on the pier which allows you to fish there without a license. There are several websites which update fishing reports . In fairly close proximity there is Pier #60 in Clearwater , John'sPass , and 2 piers at Fort DeSoto park( one gulf pier, one bay pier). Also available there is flats fishing , kayak fishing, fly fishing , and surf casting .
Current fishing reports show trout , whiting, some sea bass, grouper , and most recently spanish mackeral being caught . Fishermen report that several of the spanish mackeral have come over the rail partially bitten off, and several rigs "being spooled" , suggesting that kingfish are also present. Bait reports have been almost non-existant due to the colder than average water temperatures, although that should soon change .
I would suggest that , if possible , you bring a surf rod and supplies, a stouter pier rod with heavier line and hooks, and a pair of waders with a more supple inshore fishing rod and light line . This would afford you the opportunity to partake of all the fishing opportunities in the Tampa / St. Pete area .
