surf fishing Ireland??

This thread should qualify for "Everywhere else."

My wife has been hinting around about taking a trip to see where her grandparents lived and where her parents families are from........in Ireland. Does anyone know anything about surf fishing in this country? Specifically..... County Mayo to the north west  and Wexford to the south east. Any information or websites would be appreciated.  Thanks, T

Prior to visiting 'relatives' in Ireland , I would suggest that you do some geneological research with some of your living relatives.  People on the 'Emerald Isle' welcome their bretheren from the 'colonies', and might offer lodgings and a warm hearth to family.

The two  best sources on surf / sea fishing that i could find would be:

SEA-ANGLING-IRELAND.ORG ,  and

http://www.irishfisheries.com/sea.asp ( (includes game, coarse, and seas fishing information and hotel accomodations in Mayo , Sligo , and Wexford. The forums page is outdated and dead. )The website also indicates productive locations according to County , and fishing access (due to stone cliffs), as well as the most productive tidal flow and wind shelter . It might be more helpful to find a local ghillie or guide .The listed best times to visit and fish is between May to September

However , you will have to learn a new fishing dialect terms such as: coalfish , wrasse , tope, spurdog ,smoothdog , conger, Bull Huss, Weevers, etc., etc....

Re: surf fishing Ireland??

Irish Tinker,

Thank you for the information. I'm going to research this. This trip is at least a year in the future, but If it does happen I am going to make a point to fish. My wifes maiden name is Foley and her Moms maiden name is Kerrigan. I would love to make this trip. Thank you again for taking the time to respond.

Terry
