Nice permit Jeff!  Wish I was having that problem (deciding between the lite and regular hooks because the size of fish I am catching are straightening the lites).  Always enjoy your permit posts.

Awesome catch Jeff.  Are the techniques for targeting permit the same as pompano?  I.e., bait used, 4oz sputniks, cast on to the outer sandbars, etc?  I was thinking I'd have to finally go to the Keys to target permit but a road trip down the east coast would be much easier.  Are they seasonal in your area or do they migrate like the pompano?

Thanks

Well, I'll tell u what I do...

I fish an Earl Brinn pomp rig with Owner Mutu 2/0 circle hooks (was "Lite", but going to regular I think).  I use main line 50# floro.  I used to use 30# snoods, but just recently moved to 40# after having a couple raging permit snap my snoods.  I almost always use a 5oz pyramid sinker (I get the best distance with 5). And, basically I zing it out there as far as I can, regardless of sandbars. (We usually have a slight sandbar about 20yds from the beach, then a slender slope to deeper water.)  I use the biggest sand fleas I can find, usually about 1" long, and live are certainly best.  I watch the tip real closely... most permit I've caught just slightly wiggled the tip and then the rod went striaight up (slack in the line).... I quickly reel in to remove slack and apply gentle reeling pressure (I don't "set" the hook).  Then hold on.  My recommendation is be pretty patient with them... don't try to horse them in, and be gentle with the drag.  (I've had a few that "ran for the fences" and I had to slowly dial in more drag... all of them broke the snood before I ran out of line, so I'm gonna try to be a bit more patient myself with the drag.

I've caught most permit in Mar & Apr.  A couple in Oct. A few in late Dec, early Jan.   My understanding is they are pretty common along the coast almost anywhere from the Keys at least up to Jupiter, and mostly in the June - Aug time period.  Juno Beach is a popular area for permit.

I'm thinkin' of a yak fishin' trip to the lower keys myself to get a permit from my yak (which I've never done... yet!).

Hey Jeff, Another quality Permit from our southern most member. You da MAN! I always enjoy seeing what awesome fish you pull from the ocean.

For the fishermen in the N E Fl area check you catches this summer. The hotter and drier our Summer is the more likely someone in the Jax/ St Aug area will catch a Permit.

See ya'll on the beach, Noel

Even if you don't catch fish you're still at the beach. It's a Win Win!

Funny you should say that.  I had the rod waggle today grabbed it and it felt like pulling in a log for a few yards, then dead stop, nothing doin, could not move it. No head shakes, nothing.....

Hook came back to me just like yours, made me mad as it was an FM super secret gob stopper rig!  I figured it was a big ray, but I guess you never know.

Maybe it was a log...
