Caught a nice 17# 28" permit this morning on a sand flea on Boca beach!  Check out the hook.... it pulled just as I got the fish on the beach.. .almost got away!  (...and I just eased him in.)  Looks like I'm gonna have to move to regular hooks, instead of the "lite" hooks.

Caught on a large frozen sand flea on a pomp rig, just before high tide with a 10mph ESE breeze and 2' waves (perfect conditions!) on my AFAW Surf rod, Penn 525mag, 17# Sufix Tritanium Plus line.

straightened hook:

Naw, never use those Eagle Claw 197's myself.... too bendy for bigger fish IMHO.  I use Owner Mutu Lite 2/0, but this got me thinkin' about using the regular Mutu hooks which would be a tad stronger.... wondering if it would affect my permit bite???

It's time to go from thinkin to doin

I wonder if that permit was looking for Steve?  That sand looks new, have they been bringing in sand on your beaches?

The hook in the photo is an Owner Mutu Lite 2/0.  Love them, but this is the 2nd or 3rd hook seriouslly bent outta shape by a permit.  I got some of the regular Mutu's.... they seem significantly thicker, so I stayed with the Lites, but I guess I'll have to try them to see if they affect the bite.

Yeah, they "renourished" the beach earlier this year.    I think it reduced the bite here some (since no permit until this one since the renourishment).
