Arrived at the beach at first light. Water was still a rough and dirty from the big blow Friday and saturday, but definitely fishable after 2 weeks without wetting a line.

i had the catfish curse right from the start. I caught a lot of catfish. i was thinking about leaving  when my short rod- undersized reel and light rod i use to cast short - went crazy. After a great fight and several good runs , I was able to beach a beautiful 24" black drum. E Haw!! Life was good again.

10 minutes later, again on the short rod, i hooked into another big boy. I saw his tail when he was turning - another black drum. He satrted another run and ended up throwing the hook. URGHHH

So, it ended up a good day. I only caught 4 whiting to go with my drum, but it will be a good fish dinner tonight.

Congrats on the nice Black Drum. I love it when you catch real nice fish on the "small short rod".

Even if you don't catch fish you're still at the beach. It's a Win Win!

Hi Noel - Got to agree with you. That rod has no backbone and the reel is so undersized i had a heck of a time getting that fish in the rough surf. He was doing pretty much anything he wanted to. It was a great fight.

I really do like the pole and its great for the whiting- especially when I get a nice bull. You are actually playing the fish and not just horsing them in.

On the flip side, That big boy made for a great dinner. It fed 4 people and there was even enough scraps for the dog. Black drum is my girlfriend's favorite fish. She will take it  over pompano. Go figure.
