After seeing the posts regarding the closing of the parking lots at Matanzas NP, I e-mailed a long time friend who is a NPS Ranger the Castillo de San Marcos Nat'l Monument  and asked about timelines, etc. He advised me that the lots were closed on the first of this month fo expansion (adding more parking space due to the closing of beach driving). The estimated time line for the project was 2 months. He advised that the contractors report they are ahead of schedule.

Yes, this will be inconvinient for a while ... however ... I don't think we will ever see condos on that stretch of beach, or along the Canaveral Nat'l sea shore ... The Park service may have taken away an access that affects a number of people now, but it is also trying to preserve one of our national treasures , not only for us, but for generations to come. Two months of inconvinent parking is a small price to pay for maintaining something that will hopefully last for many generations to come.  If it were not for the fact that Matanzas is a National Monument, there would be condos there and not only could we not drive on the beach, there would probably be no public parking or public access.

Agree, agree, agree, but they should have improved access prior to closing beach access.  I find their behavior to be passive aggressive.  I think someone should be fired or relocated to guard the national treasures in Idaho.
