Vilano Beach  (N/A)
Newbie here. Family and I spent last week at Vilano Beach. Had a good time. My son and I spent alot of time fishing on the pier (slow), fished on the beach (caught whiting and a bonnet head), and went out with a guide (drummancharters). Had a blast with the guide and this made it difficult to return to the pier, although the pier is very relaxing and the locals are entertaining.

Thursday morning my wife and I went for a walk on the beach and happened upon a couple of guys fishing on the Vilano Beach just north of the rocks. One of the guys mentioned being a member of a fishing club and we watched him catch a shark and ray (or skate), the other guy called this guy Bill. (other guy looked like Jeff Rafter--I don't know Jeff, but I've been browsing the forums and noticed the picture--forgive me if I'm wrong).

I'm looking forward to going back maybe this fall for a couple of days. This brings me to my question. What kind of rig do you folks use when fishing from a pier? I bought a rig from the bait store that had snap hooks for a sinker and two hooks--just tossed it a short distance from the pier. We didn't catch much and I'm wondering if a Carolina rig would work better.

Thanks for any tips you can offer.

This might not be exciting to you FL folks, but here's a video of my son landing a skate.

Compared to our freshwater fish this thing gave my son a workout.

Ty, that wasn't me - all us old bald guys look alike. Maybe it was Jim Covert. Anyhow, glad you and the family had a good time.

Re: Vilano Beach  (N/A)

It wasn't me as I was there from 1am to 6am.The only person out there was the local LEO killing time.

It was real slow in the inlet and worse out front near the rocks. There wasn't any mullett around but I did save about a 15lb ray for bait later on.

I need to get out there during the day hours as the area from the rocks to around the inlet has changed a lot.
