Anyone else notice the story in Sunday's paper about an 18# tripletail beign caught in the surf in south ponte vedra?  Anyone know much about realistically targeting these fish in our waters or was this a truly lucky catch?  Anyway, another reason to love surf fishing...you never know what you're gonna catch.

Here is the photo from today's paper.

That's a rare catch from the surf, there are some caught in the Intercoastal during the summer but not many. The Jax pier gets 5-10 a year but they're usually in 15' of water,we just look for something that looks like a brown paper bag floating on top and there he is.They are good eating but how hard was it to clean?

Tripletail  (N/A)
Never caught one int he surf but have caught plenty fishing around buoys and channel markers. Like Jim said, they do float on top, much like an ocean sunfish, but typically I've only seen and caught them around some kind of surface structure. I don't really know much about them and have never targeted them.

I caught one four or five years ago at Flagler Beach. Until this fish I had not heard of another surf caught TT.

Mine was caught using a sand flea for bait in the near-shore slough. It was a day following many where the Saragasso weed had been thick. Walt Matuzak was with me and we theorized the fish had come in with the weed as they like to feed on the little crustaceans in the offshore weed lines. Mine was only about four pounds.
