We don't have a monopoly on the slow bite. Last Thursday at Folly Beach, SC (on James Island east of Charleston) I took my brother surf fishing. Not a bite for four hours on fresh crab.

I walked out on Folly Beach pier, which is a great facility, and observed the South Carolinians in action. Not much happening. One old pier rat, who had good tackle and technique, gave me the location of where he used to surf fish when he had good legs. (That was the same spot that didn't produce a bite.) I asked him about the Pompano run, which I hoped was starting. He said in twenty years fishing the area he had not seen a Pompano caught. from the beach -- talk about your good times! I wonder where Kingfish takes Toejam to catch all them SC Pompano? Looking at the outline of the coastline it must be up near the NC border. The beaches around Charleston are basically south facing and affected by too many small rivers flowing through the salt marshes. The surf color and clarity has never looked like Pompano water -- but where were the Red Drum?

Now home and haven't fished since before tournament, I find the fishing reports disappointing. Maybe its house painting time.

Talk about a slow day ...

First I went to Bob's B & T to wait for Suellen and the gang who said "Sunday at 6:00 at Bobs" ... I was early ... nobody else showed up ... including Bob ... no fresh bait there ... went to Devil's Elbow only to discover they weren't open till 7:00 ... so off to Matanzas to look for the rest of the bunch ...  they wern't there either ... so I proceeded to fish with the salted clams and shrimps I had ... first cast produced a 14" whiting .... several hours later I had another bite ... finished with four 12" to 14" whitings. Nice to see the ocean floor ... hadn't seen that in a while water was clear ... current going north at a pretty good clip.

Noel came down to the beach later in the AM from the condo ... told me Suellen actually came down Saturday ... Most excitement seen all day was when Noel's line drifted over in front of mine (that had to be the case, since I was north of Noel and the current was running north. .. don't believe I casted OVER his line although I do close my eyes when I cast ...)  anyway I reeled in his line while bringing in a double header of whiting (1 small and one not quite so small ..I knew I had a bite  'cause Noel yelled over at me to grab my rod ...)  Noel apparantly didn't notice I had one of his lines in my hand ... so I gave the line a few really hefty tugs just to make sure that it was attached to his rod and  reel securely ... of course Noel was a good ways from his pole when he saw it start dancing and double over ... I would not have believed that Noel could run that fast ... he jumped over at least two surf carts and knocked over a little old lady trying to get to the pole ... who sez you can't have fun when the fish ain't biting ...?

Having a good time is what it's all about ... catching a few fish now and then is icing on the cake.  I go for the adventure and the fun ... two weeks ago I fished the Gate station and (I swear this is true, I can't make this stuff up ...)  I caught a man's bathing suit ... there wasn't nobody in it at the time  ... it appeared to be fairly fresh ...meaning it didn't look like it had been in the water too long. .. the surf was fairly rough that day ...so I'm sure there was some poor guy down current from me in some sort of compromising situation ... Now had it been a ladies suit I would have been forced to do the right thing and go looking for the  owner ... you know just to return it and all ...
