There were no fish at the RP 'cause they were all at the Gate, a mile south. Fished Sunday AM on the incoming tide. Started catching at 9:00. Finished with 14 whiting. Largest being 17", then a 15", and a 14.5 ". The rest were 12-13 inch. Put 7 of the larger ones in the box and threw back anything under 12". As there were not too many others catching, a lot of people were glaring at me when they saw me throw so many back.
They were not more than 20-30 yards out. Saw a few other fish taken. Everyone else I talked to said they had 1 or 2 or none... they were all fishing with frozen shrimp. I was fishing with fresh shrimp. Picked them up at the Fisherman's Dock seafood market in Mandarin. On San Jose, just north of Loretto Rd. They always seem to have fresh local shrimp. 5.99 a pound with heads (cheaper in 5 pound lots)... got 4 pieces of bait from each shrimp...big shrimp...tasty, too. Got 2 pounds...ate one pound Saturday night and took the rest fishing on Sunday. They do not keep fisherman's hours, so visit them the day before you head out if you plan on fishing real early.
One of the fish had some big sand fleas in the stomach, all the rest had shrimp ... probably ate the shrimp up at the rock pile ...
