Shark Identification?

A friend of mine caught this small shark on New Smyrna Beach. Can anyone help identify it? I thought it was either a sandbar or a sharpesnose......but now I think that I'm wrong... Thanks, T

Terry, it looks to me as an Atlantic Sharpnose; so I think you're correct. It also looks like it could be a "Silky" shark, but the "Sharpnose" is the most plentiful species in the area.

The pectoral and 1st dorsal fins of a Sandbar are quite large in comparison to other sharks.

At any rate it is a nice little shark caught and released at "The Shark Bite Capital of the World".

Jeff,

Thanks for the confirmation. I caught one of these last year and wasn't quite sure but after this one was caught and some research I believe that it is indeed an Atlantic Sharpnose Shark. Thanks for the reply and I'll see you Saturday in class. Terry
