Re: Catching half fish, switched method

Yes Brian, I am a member of a surf fishing club. We have outings where them that wish, meet up and spend the day catching fish, sharing knowledge, and sometimes- hotdogs and watermelon and such. Monthly meetings are held where presentations are made and special guests are invited to speak. We conduct EXPOS and tournaments and hold banquets and get discounts on bait and tackle, and even maintain this.....our club owned website.......with secret sections where members post secret type stuff and all.

Membership status used to be much harder to achieve. I was brutaly hazed and was forced to pay bribes and carry people's stuff off the beach, but I have heard that lately the standards have been relaxed and people get in with just a smile and a check. If you are interested in meeting people who surf fish as a life style choice, ask for information regarding the next meeting. I believe it will be on the second Monday in August, in the evening at some restaurant. You could swing by and introduce yourself and tell them that you are the undertaker's guest. Then see if they like you. They might let you dine with them and stay for the meeting. You will be on your own after that.

One of the charter members conducts surf fishing classes- Jeff Rafter. He is the one that made me carry his stuff off the beach. Anyways, he doesn't just lecture people, but rather gives a comprehensive presentation that just about covers everything. Perfect for transplants from Michigan that can't get their brothers to pull them on sleds any more. I attended several of his classes and must say that I was extremely impressed with the quality of the information and was amazed at the quantity of information. He even covers beach ettiquette- not that I need that or anything you understand. Not Me. Anyways, send him a PM and get started. The sooner the better.

I will always be grateful they let me join in on the fun. Gave me something to do in between my needy peoples. It all goes away when I am on the sand. There it is just me, my maker and his creations, and my friends. Coming home with a cooler of fish ain't all that bad neither. I enjoy my little discoveries, and experiment with anything that will hold still. Yes, it is a life style- my life style now. Everybody needs something you know, and I don't like listening to hoards of Harleys or standing around waxing old cars or sitting around looking at old postage stamps.

I love an adventure.......life is an adventure......and your adventure awaits you. Go get you some.

Re: Catching half fish, switched method

Brian, Our next club meeting is Mon 7/12/10. Ramada Inn..Mandarin..6pm dinner...7pm meeting. You are welcome to come by and meet the club. I'll share with you my knowledge of catching 5' to 9' sharks from the the surf with casted baits. Your equipment is good. We can talk about better rigs and techniques to landing big toothy and then what to do when you land them!

Even if you don't catch fish you're still at the beach. It's a Win Win!

Re: Catching half fish, switched method

Brian, Paul has a way with words and spins a good yarn, sometimes a bit embellished, but his suggestion of taking the surf fishing classes is a good one IMHO. There are many differences between fishing for Northerns, Walleye and Great Lakes-run-Salmon  and our numerous Florida surf species.

On the subject of surf fishing etiquette, it took me better than half an hour to show Paul how to correctly hold his pinkie while carrying that cooler off the beach -- poor boy can't help it if he's a bit slow.

Re: Catching half fish, switched method

I appreciate the responses and hope meet all of ya. I am going to try to make the July 12 meeting but am currently working night shift and may prove impossible. So what are the club fees? How do I reach the status where my equipment is carried for me (lol) no... Actually I have built a pretty nice cart that holds all my tubes and gear perfectly and when necessary, carries the umbrella,  her accessories and all that stuff when it is a fishing / family day at the beach...yep ... poles go on family day too...I did have to experiment on the wheels quite a bit, but think I have found the perfect set. I am definately interested in the club, sounds very resourceful. Thanks Brad for the words "don't be in a rush" on the kayak, because I am, was in All Wet Sports this weekend and almost bought a Cobra Navigator to fish off of and carry baits on the surf but am trying to wait for a deal on Craigslist or jaxkayak.

Quote of the day:

"The less routine, the more life"
