First off, I will introduce myself. Name is Brian and moved to Florida from Michigan 2 years ago, in part because of the fishing and seemingly endless sunny days, anyone who does not understand that statement, spend a fall, winter and spring up there. Anyway, after 5 vacations to visit family which I spent weeks of surf fishing, I made the decision to move. I have fished the Great Lakes since a little boy, heck, even remember older brothers pulling me on a sled to go ice fishing years ago. But the biggest catch (over 28 yrs) was a 25 # king salmon. I have caught a 45 # stingray and quite a few 3-4 foot sharks on the surf, and have been in flats boats and caught reds and trout. Still an exciting event when the pole is screaming and tube is inching towards the open water, almost the same rush as pulling the arrow for a large white tail buck. I pulled in a 4 foot black tip off the Fernandina Beach surf Saturday. I was actually fishing for whiting and trout when half fish began to appear. I am doing everything I can to catch a 5 footer or larger this year. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Equipment: 2  12' ugly sticks with Penn 850 ssm reels . spun with 65 lb. power pro. Older Penn reels were much better quality, but these are doing the job for now.

I make my own rigs out of 7 strand or tooth proof titanium and beads, sinker slides and swivels.

Becareful and respectful of the fish and the tourists- either will go from docile to hostile in a flash. Try to fish secluded beaches....not ones with people swimming around. Inlets are good places to find sharks. If asked, mention redfish and leave the shark part out. You don't need super duty rigs and reels and rods to land six footers. The fish finder rig is a standard for sharks. Try to keep things sporty....they don't actually go very far when they run. They swim along the edges of the sand bars, in the troughs, and even little pieces of fresh fish get their attention. Set your spikes solid and use circle hooks and long handled hook removers.....and never take your eyes off the fish when you are close to it. They are extremely fast and powerful, and they get mad sometimes.

There are alot of people fishing for sharks, and the internet is full of dedicated websites. Google "land based shark fishing" and see what they use for 'stuff'. There are contests held yearly and everyone who is decent about things, wants the fish to swim away unharmed. There is a shark research site somewhere out there and they supply tags and such for you to use at no charge.

...and nothing beats hanging out with them that are really into the sport. Many little things get aquired quickly that way. Maybe you will be able to catch up with the ones who post here.

Good luck and enjoy Florida. Remember to call home when the blizzard hits up there, and they will learn to call you when the hurricanes come our way. At some point, you will begin to question why people stay up there. Then one day you will find yourself swatting skeeters in February and catch yourself talking about "Yankees"  and such ....and then your done..... and suddenly remembrances of "Home" will involve sand (we don't actually have flamingos you know). Yup.....illegal fireworks, palm trees and no state income tax- paradise. Our deer are tiny, but eat good. Lots of hunting available. I have attended many first rate dove hunts and many folks like to hunt hogs. Do yourself a great big favor.....get a snorkle mask and fins and explore the springs and such. I went scalloping in the Gulf Sunday and that was too cool.

Now if we could just get people to learn how to drive.....only Yankees ride in the left lane.

Thanks for the reply, I am still learning the fishing scene down here and any information is appreciated. One thing about respect for others out there, I was in Fernandina fishing the surf and a small boat came and stopped over my lines, he had the entire ocean front and he stopped in front of where my sinkers were, I am sure he seen me throwing my hands up in disghust. After a cast in front of him (which went past his boat) he left minutes later. So onto a better subject, I am in the process of purchasing a kayak for fishing the rivers and creeks but also to tote baits on the surf. Been reading quite a bit about gear and the need for larger capacity spools for line. Picked up a PENN 114H 6/0 and am looking at purchasing a PENN 116 12/0, any thoughts on these reels, the older 114H is probably 15 years old and is like brand new. Tore it apart and looks like it has never seen a fight. As for the kayak fishing, did a little on Lake erie years ago, but I had a touring kayak and tipped it a couple times trying to fish. These wide sit-on-tops are amazingly stable. Had an Ocean Caper for about a year but sold it with intention of picking up a better one for fishing (kept spending my savings). Looking at the Cobra Navigator and the Malibu Pro Explorer kayaks, trying to find a nice used one. Any info on a good deal for 12/0 PENN or fishing kayak would be great.

Can't offer anything on the reels.....but the kayaks.

If I was you, I would check out some of these kayak based websites around here. Apparently it isn't easy to find 'just the right' boat. People buy, then pimp them out, then sell them at a loss. I hear one can aquire a ready to go boat, with electronics and many fancy upgrades for less than a plain old new boat. Also, it is good to know where you will be using it. Some are better at being paddled long distances than others. Open expanses of water also can steer the boat off course, and certain ones do better with respect to that. Of course, some boats do better in the surf than others. I mention all of this because the kayakers I know are always getting new boats because the old one doesn't do something.

In regards to casting at boats- Years ago I got so mad at some jet skis. They just had to mess with me- over and over and over. I started frothing and reason left me, and I became focused on killing them. I had knife in teeth and was on my way out to them when a big old cop called out to me. Later I realized that if they had come to me, I probably would have filleted them, and would have had to splain myself. This is the exact same reason I don't do road rage any more either. "He cut me off.....so he and his whole family had to die" Just give them the finger, or do like Steeleader does- she moons them. maybe an airhorn would be obnoxious enough.

Yeah, I have been looking around a bit on a few websites for a kayak and am camparing the different abilities of each... storage, rod holders, length etc. As for the boaters on the surf, yes, I could have easily hit the boat and possibly them and opted to move down a bit and cast in front of them in hopes they realized how close they were. I would move before frustration gets the best of me, have learned that life is a continual lesson in patience. So, are you a member of any surf fishing club ? recommend any ? Don't know too many people here and only a couple of them fish.
