Friday Night Shark

I went out again Friday night got set up. I dropped a ray wing about 275 yards on a 20/0 circle hook. By the time I got back to shore and I got my 2nd rod out of the rod holder BAM I have a screaming run, I let him run for a 10 count and then fish on after about 3 minutes, than all of a sudden nothing. I reel in to find that the crimp failed where the hook connects to the cable. So I put another one out and after about 1 hour I get a run and land a 5ft lemon.

I had 5 more runs that resulted in break-offs, one failed crimp, and 2 where the fish just dropped the bait after about 40-50 seconds...

Re: Friday Night Shark

Nice!  So are you yakking bait out 250 - 300 yards...at night?  That adds another bit of excitement to shark fishing.  Looks like you have a decent amount of light around you.  Using coleman lanterns or what?    Is that black electrical tape around the hook?  I saw that tip on the "Texas Sharkfishing" website but have yet to try it.

What would you estimate a 5 foot shark's weight?

Re: Friday Night Shark

Yes I'm kayaking them out about 300 day, and 150-200 at night. The only reason is because the ocean has been like a lake. It is scary at first but then it is actually quite peacful out there under the moon in the ocean. Yes I was using a colman lantern, keeps the camp lit up well. The black electrical tape I use 90% of the time. It works I can tell you that. Sharks have a real sensitivity to magnetic currents and the tape helps for that and increase your pick-ups. The tips from TSF will help, keep reading. As far as weight I'm not sure because I did not have a girth measurment. The weight will depend on how fat the fish is, my last one was fat this one was not very fat., I guess maybe 150lbs, but I could be way off I'm not sure.

Re: Friday Night Shark

Marshall, Looks like my kind of fun! That's a nice fat female Spinner Shark you caught. The easy way to tell if its a Lemon is that the first dorsal fin and the second dorsal are almost the same size. Nice catch. I'm looking forward to more pix this summer. Noel

Even if you don't catch fish you're still at the beach. It's a Win Win!
