I'm just getting back into fishing after many years.  Someone told me recently it was illegal to fish for shark on the beaches of Fernandina Beach (Amelia Island).  Is that true?  Could this be some sort of city ordinance?

Thanks.

No, you are permitted to fish for any species from shore. No local jurisdictions have any kind of authority to discriminate one type of fishing over the other. Only the state is allowed to pass those laws. Local officials are elected by the community to run that town and/or city according to state laws. They cannot pass laws that contradict state law.

That being said, if you decide to shark fish during the day, you should try to get as far as posible from swimmers and surfers. Sometimes walking a little way down the beach is a good idea. Also, if asked, I would tell people you are tarpon fishing. I agree with BTH as far as our rights, but why start a problem if there isn't one . We walk sometimes 1/2 mile or more to get away from people. Fishing at night is another option.

Which reminds me, when are we doing another Big Shark Saturday Night?

Very True!

I mostly fish at night now. And if anybody asks during the day, I'm fishing for Big Fish. And if somebody asks, "like what", I'll show them pictures of the kingfish and other big fish caught from shore that are not sharks. And I say that sometimes we catch sharks here, You never know what your going to catch, it's the ocean.
