Salted Shrimp ??  (N/A)

A  recipe for satled catfish cheeks was posted recently by Richard ... I have heard/seen discussion regarding salted shrimp and/or clams... is the process for shrimp & clams similar / same as the catfish cheek method?

Also ... what is the advantage of salting shrimp / clams? Are fish more attracted to it than previously frozen shrimp?  Do some species take to salted baits more readily than others?

Obviously, (I would think) the fresher the bait the better ...correct? ... so when do you use salted baits?

Here is Richard's Salted Catfish recipe:

...cut them into ... offering size pieces...put the pieces of catfish cheeks into bowl, then add  Kosher, sea salt, or preserving salt... put enough salt on to cover the bait, then  turn it into the bait and add some more. cover with plastic wrap, and put into the fridge. Take out and turn the bait over daily....after about 4 days, you have salted catfish cheeks. Now get a cookie sheet, put a layer of wax paper down   and spread the bait over the wax paper. Now put into the freezer over night. When ready get a freezer bag, and bag the bait....If they are done right, they will not be solid frozen, but like plastic...

Not being one to use salted baits, the only advantage I can give you is it will stay on the hook better. Others I am sure can give you more information on that aspect.

For me personally, I wont use a shrimp in Jacksonville that wasn't caught up there, nor would I use shrimp from up there down here in the lagoon, Canaveral area. I firmly believe using  local caught shrimp is very important. Especially when fish are in a picky mood. Now in the lagoon, I always use live local shrimp, but in the surf, live, fresh dead, frozen, as long as they are local all seem to work just fine. Also I have used the Gulp artificial shrimps in a local color that work kinda ok in the surf. Still prefer real baits though.

There are a lot of surf casters on here that can give you some great information on the salting processes and catch rates though.

It aint about what ya got but rather what THEY want!!

About the salted shrimp....do them the same way as the catfish nuggets....and the reason for salted shrimp is conservation of bait, under fishing conditions, they last longer, I keep them on ice when I am fishing...in fact all my baits are kept on ice in baggies in my cooler. Under hot conditions the bait holds up, and is fishable.

When I am not fishing...the 6 pack hard cooler with bait on ice is kept in the fridge....with my wife's permission....she knows that I am trying to change shrimp into pompano....

When I first started this type of fishing...I would buy frozen shrimp....and they would all go mushy...with the salted bait...they never freeze solid, and if I was down here in Florida full time...I would package a bait as salted shrimp, and sell it to bait stores. I always have a large bag of salted bait in the freezer, then I just take what I need in another baggie and put on ice and go fishing....it would be a great package bait.

Over the years, I have had good luck catching pompano and reds on salted shrimp.

I agree with Bennie.  Salted anything is a fall-back bait.  Fresh is best.  We usually buy live shrimp and just keep them in a baggie in the cooler on ice packs, not real ice, because we don't want any fresh water getting on the bait (Jeff Rafter Fishing School Grad, Class of Spring 2009).  Same for the clams, we crack them on the beach.  Yes, fresh is not so convenient on the fishermwomen or man, but the fish like it best and were are there to please the fish.
