LTI 24 Hr Access  (N/A)

Per our monthly meeting a few months back, I promised to look into 24 hour access at LTI for people who buy an annual pass.  I had to inquire a few times but finally got this response from Aaron Rodriguez, Asst Park Manager.  Not the response I was hoping for but at least a logical response as to why it is not available.  There are a few alternatives for early morning access...mainly park and bike in!

Gary,

Little Talbot Island does not participate in the 'After-hours' permit program, though we have given consideration to implementing an after-hours feature similar to Anastasia and Fort Clinch State Park .  The main concern has been security.  Little Talbot Island is in a remote location with regard to law enforcement, fire and rescue, public traffic, and park staff response time.  After-hours is when park staffing is at a minimum and when our equipment and facilities are most vulnerable to vandalism or theft.  If the Talbot gate is inadvertently left open it may be an invitation to mischief and undesirable activities.  Several years ago park staff was having this same discussion of an after-hours permit when the Little Talbot administrative building experienced a break-in and lost several thousand dollars of equipment.

Here at the Talbot parks we do have several areas that are open twenty-four hours and available to surf fishing.  The south end of Little Talbot island can be accessed by parking in our Fort George Inlet parking lot and walking in the south access.  Seven miles north of the Little Talbot entrance is  Amelia Island State Park , which has access to the Nassau Sound and the Atlantic ocean .  The shore can be accessed by parking in the parking lot and walking to the shore or by four-wheel drive vehicle.

Visitor comment and suggestions are welcomed and encouraged and often initiate an action or change in the park.  In this case, we have debated the advantages and disadvantages of an after-hours permit and have determined that because of the security concerns we can not safely implement the program here at Little Talbot.

We hope that you continue to visit the Talbot Islands and other Florida State Parks and will continue to offer suggestions for improvement.  If you would like more information on the twenty-four hours access areas please contact me or the Talbot Ranger Station.

Gary, thanks for your willingness to hang in there and  keep the club informed of your efforts.  The information you have passed on is worth exploring.

Thanks again.
