few basics  (N/A)

Hey there guys.  Just a few questions.

What is a good size weight and hook for surf fishing.

Right now I have a Abu Garcia spinner on a 10' surf rod, medium/heavy action with 20 lb test line.

sound about right?  got any suggestions?

Thanks!!  Matt

Re: few basics  (N/A)

You did not say what type of surf rod you have as they are rated for different weights.  As a general rule most people use between 3 oz and 5 oz.  I perfer to use the lightest weight that I think I can get away with, but if the current is fast then I up the weight to counter this.  Also the pattern of the weight will dictate how many oz of lead I use.  If I use a pyramid sinker I might use a 5oz but if I use a storm sinker it maybe only 4 oz.. Note: the rule for line weight is 10lbs per oz.   So if you are using 20 lb test for you shock leader then you would throw 2 oz lead.  I use 60 lb shock and 17 lb main line.  Shock leader wraps around the spool about 8 times then ties to the main line.

Regarding the shock leader.  I use a 12 ft fast action rod with a abu garcia bait caster.  Anytime I tie on a leader and try to cast the knot catches on the eyes and I backlast my reel. I use a blood knot to marry the line.  My main line is suffix.  My question is how can I prevent this or minimize this.

Thanks for your help

I use an Abu 6500 C5 mag with 17# suffix and 65# power pro.  I tie a uni-uni knot and don't have the problem.

When you use a blood knot you need to "play" with the knot to lay it down evenly.  This goes with all knots.  What you don't want is a glob of line where the two lines meet.
