Shock leaders are a heavier line that will handle the stress of the initial throw of the lead.

There are as many opions on this board as there are members. Since you are a newbie u don't know whose is sound and whose is not. Taking Captain Rafters lessons will save you way more money than the cost of the lessons so you won't end up with a room full of equipment never used anymore and you saying to yourself ever time u look at it, "Wish I knew then what I know now when i bought that"!

I strongly recommend Jeff’s classes. He covers surf equipment and rigs thoroughly.  Knowing what equipment and rigs work best keeps you from purchasing those that don’t saving you money while maximizing your success in the surf.  I benefited much from those classes and as Toejam mentioned wished I knew then what I know today when I purchased some of my initial gear.
