lures/rigs?

Hello from the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Va!

I'm planning a trip to New Smyrna beach in a couple of weeks...I'm an avid surf fisherman (hell, fisherman for that matter),,,been going to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for many years...I will be flying to Florida...what I want to do is mail some gear to the place I'm staying. In an effort to keep the cost of shipping down, and to be well prepared, can some of you guys/girls tell me what you cannot live without down there. Are there any Spanish Mackeral around this time of year? (that is one of my favorites from the beaches of Cape Hatteras) looks like pompano fishing is big...I caught some nice pompano back in June on Hatteras) I have always used sand fleas for pompano...

Also, I'm staying at the Ocean Sands Beach Club...probably fish right around there..or at least I hope to depending on crowds and such...any places nearby that you could recommend, or willing to put on the internet I'd appreciate that too...if you would rather email me directly, I will be glad to provide my email address...

Thanks in advance for any help,

Tim

Re: lures/rigs?

Hello tim.  I'm from Roanoke but live in Jacksonville just north (90miles) of New Smyrna.  I would recommend the following if fishing any beach:  First read the beach.  Fishing from the beach in back of the hotel is convient but if you spend some time at low tide looking for runouts, or any structure that would attrack fish, you will have more success.  Most of the surf fishermen that I know prefer two hours before low tide and two hours after.  They like two get to the second bar.  Most use double dropper rigs with 4zo weights.  Check with the local tackle shops for the FRESHEST shrimp, also dig your own sand fleas.  Most people have had good success just south of you at Canaveral National Seashore.  I forget which access is best.

This time of year, fishing is a little on the lean side. Local knowledge is a big plus. Try to hook up with one of our members or better yet, consider Noel's Guide service for a day to let him show you what works during this time of year.

Re: lures/rigs?

Yea...I looked into several guides...I'd love to do some inshore fishing...snook on a fly rod has to be a helluva lot of fun...times are too lean to be able to afford that luxury unfortunately...have to rely on my experience over the years I reckon...thanks for your help...
